In the video, an unknown male can be seen standing close to the tracks moments before jumping off the platform and in front of the approaching train, with bystanders screaming as the tragedy unfolded. ‘According to reports, a male in his 40s (unknown name and address) jumped in front of a train. He was struck by the train and sustained critical injuries,‘ confirmed police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk, who added that Wynberg police registered an inquest following the incident that occurred at around 10:30am. ‘The medical services were summoned, and he was transported to a nearby hospital. However, en route, he passed away.’ A social media report by Pretoria Review shared eyewitness accounts on X, one of which noted that at first, commuters onboard the train were initially confused. ‘At first, we didn’t know what was happening. Minutes passed, and the confusion grew. Eventually, word spread through the carriage: a man had told people he was going to jump… and then he did. The shock that rippled through the train is something I will never forget,’ a commuter was quoted as saying. Another eyewitness described the visible distress of the train operator, saying: ‘One of the most heartbreaking moments was seeing the train driver, a woman who clearly carried the weight of the world on her shoulders in that moment. She looked devastated, traumatised, as if she believed she had somehow failed, even though none of this was her fault. The pain in her eyes said everything.’ The publication added that PRASA officials and SAPS responded shortly after the tragic incident. While the identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed, investigations are underway. Cape {town} Etc has reached out to PRASA for further details.
