He didn't know how to swim, you can see it on the start of the video didn't fully extend his arms or anything, guessing he panicked and focused on staying above water instead of breathing causing him to pass out or his body just got weak and passed out. Best thing to do in this situation is to float on your back to calm down get some breaths in and try to swim while you're on your back to a shallow end or to shore, or just wear inflatables.
