Federal prosecutors in South Carolina filed a notice Wednesday saying they are seeking the death penalty against Jaremy Smith, 35, who was found guilty of a string of federal crimes in connection with the killing of state police Officer Justin Hare last year. Hare had pulled over to help Smith with a flat tire in March 2024 off Interstate 40 near Tucumcari. Smith shot and killed the officer before taking off in his police cruiser, authorities said.
