The boy was killed and his body hung on a pole in the square, while other demonstrators stormed his house and set it on fire, according to local media.

A previous police statement stated that "the victim quarrels with dozens of crowds as they gathered in front of his house, after they refused his request to stay away from him, which prompted him to go to the roof of his house and shoot his personal weapon to disperse them, before storming his house and killing him."

The incident sparked widespread anger in the Iraqi street, and later the "Popular Movement" issued a statement condemning the incident and repudiating the perpetrators.
